![]() Having six cities churning out core units is better than having 3 fully upgraded cities. Early game, you should be gobbling up as much land as you can reasonably defend. However, it sounds like you're a little too focused on teching up, and not focused enough on expanding. ![]() Bear in mind that the AI gets a lot of bonus resources, particularly at higher difficulties. Welcome to the community! Yeah, Age of Wonders has quite the learning curve. This isn't to say to completely ignore your economy, but remember that in the end this is a wargame and your end goal is always to train more units to fight more battles. You need way more units than you probably think you do. You want to get as many sectors as you can, but sector upgrades are only worth it if you have two of those same sectors, unless you already have a big enough army, which you probably don't. One "trap" of this game is that many economic bonuses do not pay off fast enough. If you adopt this strategy you will find the early game goes much more smoothly with clearing, getting you more resources more quickly, and by midgame you will have hardened tier 1 and tier 2 units ready to start fighting against the AI, in battles where hopefully your mods and unit veterancy will pull you through the tougher fights. You don't have time to try to get those synergies for unit armor/experience until after you already have a strong energy economy from clearing where you can afford to be producing new units while also upgrading certain key colonies for later. As many experts will probably tell you in this thread later, your colonies early on should only really build their colony building and then start pumping out tier 1 units, stopping only to make sector buildings, or on rare occasion an advanced barracks. ![]() In general, if you're being overwhelmed by numbers, the problem is likely that you aren't producing enough tier 1 units or even tier 2's. Unless you have a really good production synergy with a sector, your starting colony should definitely be food and energy. " I usually make my start city production/food"-So, one of the genius balancing decisions they made with Planetfall is that Production isn't actually useful until the rest of your economy is working. ![]()
